Cruising to Alaska? We did and it was an AMAZING experience!
Alaska, often referred to as the Last Frontier, is one of the most breathtaking cruise destinations in the world. Amazing glaciers, rugged coastlines, and abundant wildlife make this an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, here’s what you need to know before setting sail to Alaska.
Why Cruise to Alaska?
Cruising is one of the best ways to experience Alaska’s remote beauty. Unlike land-based travel, a cruise offers access to stunning glaciers, charming coastal towns, and abundant wildlife—all awhile you only unpack once. Plus, you will enjoy comfortable accommodations, fine dining, and entertainment while surrounded by Alaska’s awe-inspiring scenery.
Best Time to Cruise
The Alaska cruise season typically runs from May to September. Each month offers unique highlights:
- May & June: Fewer crowds, blooming wildflowers, and active wildlife. (We Cruised in June and it was beautiful with lots of wildlife around.)
- July & August: Peak season with the warmest weather and long daylight hours.
- September: Smaller crowds, potential Northern Lights sightings, and end-of-season discounts.
Top Destinations & Excursions – These are the destinations / Ports we visited.
- Juneau: Visit Mendenhall Glacier, go whale watching, or take a helicopter ride to a glacier.
- Skagway: Step back in time with a ride on the historic White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad. Before you head back to the ship, take a minute to explore the town. Grab a gift or two and support the local township.
- Ketchikan: Explore the Totem Heritage Center or go on a thrilling bear-watching tour.
- Glacier Bay: Witness massive tidewater glaciers calving into the sea in this stunning national park. Charge up your camera / phone, you will not want to miss out on capturing the beauty of the glacier.
